The recent and widespread "tea party" protests have given me the idea that the District 39 property tax payers should stage a tea party of their own.
And there couldn't be a group of taxpayers who have more right to doing such a protest. Property taxes in the District 39 area are OUTRAGEOUS!!! And insult is added to injury when you realize that it is being used to support an OUTDATED and INEFFICIENT school system. A school system that only serves to support the vanity and selfishness of a small clique of "willful" people--people who are either stuck in the world of fifty years ago, or are selfishly determined to have a "local" school for "their" kids. Regardless of the tremendous population changes that are steadily reducing the school age population to nothing.
I mean, for cryin' out loud! There were only FOURTEEN students graduated last year?
And now, with the sinking economy, how can it be further justified to support such a BURDENSOME and EXPENSIVE property tax bill for people who are struggling to make ends meet.
Dr. Ehlers' concise and devastating report CLEARLY DEMONSTRATED the SIGNIFICANT cost savings of school consolidation! I know the "school in Leigh at any cost" crowd was probably squirming in their seats when the report was read, but the conclusions were undeniable.
So let's have all the people in District 39 who are FED-UP with the unjustifiable and OUTRAGEOUS property taxes to support an outdated school system have their own "tea party"!

Thank you for your posts. Taxes in the Leigh area are way out of hand and I am so glad that someone is speaking up about it. Please continue to post!
Do you have any suggestions what we can do about the high tax situation in the Leigh area? I'm afraid to talk about it with other people because the school people are so mad at people who bring up about taxes.
I have considered what the best course of action could be to help reduce the high property tax burden in the Leigh school district. I have talked with some others who are also upset by the high property taxes on this very question.
The general consensus is that it is probably not much good to bring pressure on the existing school board. Most of its current members have kids in the school and and they are going to VIOLENTLY oppose any efforts at consolidation and the subsequent tax savings.
We need to bring our concerns to a higher political level. And by that I mean we need to contact our state senator(s) and also to let Governor Heineman know about the high tax level and the need for small rural districts to consolidate. But probably most important is to let your opinions be known by the members of the State Education Committee. They have more members who are from the states larger urban areas, and are indifferent to the rural school "cult".
Write letters and telephone these people. Our voices need to be heard! Our representatives need to hear our cry of distress at these high property taxes!
